Lets start with some baseline information on the differences between them.
- An essential oil is an extract of an actual plant, it is a natural product.
- Fragrance oil is a man made scent, made with unknown ingredients.
- Essential oils are more difficult to make therefore are more expensive.
- Fragrance oils are much cheaper to make and easier to source the products, and in turn are cheaper to buy.
What does this really mean when you are using the oils for aromatherapy purposes?
Well, if you are using the oil on your skin and wish to get the benefit of its properties, I would use essential oils, they are the only ones that contain the benefits that the plants have. If its the fragrance that you need, then fragrance oils are fine.
Example: if you are using an oil diluted for massage to release muscles you would need to be using an essential oil
Example: using the oil in the bath because the smell calm your mood, you could use a fragrance oil.
Example: guests are coming for dinner and you want them to eat a lot you could simply use a fragrance oil, candle or melt.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
99% of the time I agree with you, but think about, really think about it. Unless you are inhaling large amounts of essential oils the tiny amount you would be taking in through the lungs could be of very little benefit. Do not inhale large amounts of essential oils or fragrance oils, it could be dangerous. Fragrance oils still contain the smell, so for the benefit of scent, these are perfect.
